END OF YEAR SUMMER THEMED BOOKS
Stories are the perfect way to inspire your students to look forward to summer! This can be a wonderful focus for students who might be a bit apprehensive about ending the current school year. Remind them there is LOTS of fun to look forward to in the next few months! Here are some of my favorite stories to share at the end of the school year.
(PS: None of these are affiliate links - just stories I love to read with my students!)
Summer Story #1 - And Then Comes Summer by Tom Brenner
This cute story describes all the fun things about summer, and what to expect with seasonal changes. The lyrical text has descriptions of long hot days filled with outdoor activities, fireworks, ice cream and fun with friends. So much to look forward to!
Summer Story #2 - Hot Dog by Doug Salati
The main character of this cute story is a little dog who decides to leave the summer heat of the city and explore tranquility of the beach. This story won the Caldecott Medal for 2023.
Summer Story #3 - A Camping Spree With Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen
My favorite stories to share with students are the ones that make them laugh out loud. This is one of those stories! The main character and his dog find themselves having all sorts of adventures trying to get out of hilarious situations while camping.
Summer Story #4 - Summer Vacation Here I Come by D.J. Steinberg
This book will really get students excited about summer. It’s full of funny little poems about all things summer, including ice cream trucks, sleeping in late, and fun by the water.

Summer Story #5 - Instead of Goodbye by Sadie Mueck
I might have saved the best for last with this one. It's all about that last day of school feeling, and all the emotions that go along with it for both students and teachers. It reinforces the connection between students and teachers that can last forever.
End of Year Memories
Capture those precious memories from the past year with a Memory Book. There are so many things to write about from the past year, including field trips, funny memories and more! You can take a peek at the one I use by clicking HERE.
END OF YEAR WRITING: Life Cycles
In the last two months of school the weather is getting nicer and we can do more outside. This is when I teach about life cycles. We often raise butterflies and then set them free on a nice sunny day. Teachers across the hall choose to hatch new baby chicks. Once year we gathered tadpoles from a local pond and watched them grow in a fish tank. All of these activities are so engaging - my students love them!
Here are some of the writing activities I've used with my students to write about our life cycles study. Click here to see more pictures of butterflies life cycle activities!
Or, take a peek at the bundle of life cycles! These are all similar format to encourage confidence and independence in your students. This bundle includes butterflies, ladybugs, frogs, chickens, bees and apples. Click HERE to see more pictures!
