Phonics Posters To Teach Spelling Patterns

Updated: May 2

I always have phonics posters on the walls of my primary classroom, but there are lots of other ways I use phonics posters as well!

Phonics Posters on the Wall

Most primary classrooms have a sound wall where graphemes are taught directly and individually. As opposed to the traditional alphabet chart, the posters and skills are added through the year rather than all at once. This keeps the focus on sounds we are learning at the time, or have learned previously. It also ensures students are not overwhelmed with print. Try cutting the posters apart to make matching cards for students to practice printing and spelling.

Mini Phonics Posters For Student Reference

I provide my students with small personal phonics posters for their tables, or sometimes glued into their journals to use while they write. To make this easy, I print 2 or 4 posters per printed page so they will easily fit inside a journal.

Phonics Posters As a Sorting Center

Depending on the design of the posters, you may be able to cut them apart to use as a sorting centers. This can be super simple - students sort the words and pictures under the correct phonics heading. Try it on a pocket chart, or just on the table. I use the poster sets shown below - click HERE to see more. They even include some extra printing and mystery words versions! Perfect!

Phonics Posters for the Writing Station

Another spot to keep both large and small posters is the Writing Center. This is the spot in the classroom where reference posters are most likely to be used. In fact, sometimes the writing center task will be created around the posters to reinforce the spelling pattern.
